Happy 2021! What better way to celebrate a new year than investing in your mental health and considering finding a therapist? Now, don’t get me wrong, choosing to pursue therapy can be a scary endeavor. However, it is my hope that this video will help you to understand how you can prepare for therapy, what will actually happen during your therapy experience, and how you can take steps towards reaching your self-growth and care goals.
I say it in the video, but I will say it again. Therapy is for everyone! If I could, I would shout it from the mountaintops. Everyone can benefit from having someone on their side to work with. You do not have to have “problems” to see a therapist, and they will be happy to have you regardless of who you are, where you come from, or what you have experienced. I have talked to many people whose understanding of therapy comes from what they see in TV or movies or from peers. Therapy tends to be very different from what we have been trained to expect and involves working towards concrete treatment goals while providing power to the client, not attempting to constantly “diagnose” or “psychoanalyze” them. True therapy is based on a strong working relationship, trust, vulnerability, and a willingness to change.
A great place to start looking for a therapist in your area is psychologytoday.com, where they have a list of licensed practitioners who may be available to take clients. Many therapists are only a few clicks away, so when you feel the urge, don’t hesitate to reach out! I wish you much happiness, joy, growth, and love this coming year, and hope that your therapy journey can help to accomplish this.
